This is not an easy question to answer, since I’ve never been able to, for the life of me, keep track of my spendings. But there’s one occasion that really stood out to me among my recent purchases, the one in which the item cost more than 2 times the amount I originally allocated. It was a new perfume that I got in early December. 

So, to start with, I became infatuated with perfume lately and had been contemplating treating myself to a new fragrance. As I had been saving up for some other purchases at the time, I was sort of on a shoestring budget and could only afford roughly 350,000 VND for a 10ml bottle, if I still wanna pay my own way. As a result, it took me weeks to search left and right for a soulmate scent that wouldn’t make me go broke. 

The thing is, I have always been a very finicky person with hard to compromise interests - preferring unisex perfumes over restrictively gendered aroma, unsatisfied with scents that are too light or too heavy, and usually falling for brands, as well as fragrances, that are a bit off the beaten track. This led to a collection of choices that were simply way over the budget, or unattainable due to the perfume not being imported and sold here in Vietnam. 

I almost gave up buying, because I didn’t want to settle for something mediocre just for the sake of it, until I stumbled upon Amouage Interlude Black Iris. A long name, I know, but for me to memorize it, you can tell that the perfume was incredibly memorable. With masterful layers of violet leaves, smoked leather and hints of oud, it was quite literally an incarnation of comforting luxury.

It also possessed one of the best longevity out of all fragrances I’ve ever tried, and left a subtle yet intoxicating sillage. It was everything that I could ask for at that time, and it was also very lavish. After a long while pondering, in the end, I couldn’t resist the temptation and decided to double the budget to purchase this very special aroma. Did I regret the decision? Not one bit, because when do you find a perfume that ticks all the boxes? Definitely not a bad deal at all.

1. Do you often buy more than you expected?

Well, that probably happens more often than I’d like to admit, really. I have always been a spontaneous person, who has a disconcerting habit of impulsive buying. Whenever I visit a bookstore or a stationery shop, aside from the products that I actually need to grab, I would also purchase stuff that’s completely unplanned, and quite frankly, unnecessary back home. Not exactly the best habit to fall into, so I’m trying to give it up.

2. What do you think young people spend most of their money on?

Hmmm, I guess food has always been a consistent expense for young people, as they tend to meet up at a cafe or a restaurant, or have multiple snacks and light meals as the day progresses. In addition, students residing in urban areas for their work would have to pay for their accommodation, as well as electricity and water bills.

These decades have seen, however, a new star reigning supreme as the highest priority in many youngsters’ budget - clothes and accessories. I guess it is because the young consider these items a means of self-expression, hence their increased attention to it.

3. Do you think it is important to save money? Why?

I think you can never have too much money, as the quote goes, so putting some money aside on a regular basis could be very helpful for the future. For the ones who do have plans in which money is an indispensable part, it is obviously crucial to lay aside parts of your earnings every single month to ensure you can reach your goal.

The ones who may not yet plan to do anything which involves a lot of money should still save up, because you never know when you might need some extra cash. All in all, while I do think one shouldn’t be overly stingy, one shouldn’t spend lavishly all the time either.
