I don’t believe this is easy to answer, as I have been so used to my neighborhood that I could hardly tell one particularly negative feature about it. Hmmm, if I am forced to choose, I’d probably suggest the authorities to plant some more trees in our neighorhood. 

So, to start off, let’s talk briefly about my neighborhood. I live in Tay Ho district, which arguably is one of the most visually stunning places in Hanoi. It’s ideal for sight-seeing since West Lake, the lake of which this district is named after, provides scenic view of the skyline, especially when the sun sets.

Tay Ho is also famous for its thick layers of culture accumulated throughout the centuries, shown through different relics and craft villages. Moreover, almost any life necessities can be found in easy walking distances. This paints Tay Ho as such a Mecca for both tourists and Hanoians. 

So what is the trouble in paradise and why do I believe that more trees could be of help? To keep it short, there’s a noticeable shortage of trees in the local area surrounding our house. While this doesn’t cause any huge difficulties in winter, the long summer days in Hanoi definitely become much more unbearable due to lack of shades. I constantly feel like a burnt piece of meat on a BBQ grill when I travel around, and I really believe some trees could put an end to this misery of mine, or at least alleviate it.

The trees are far from just public air-conditioners though; they offer so many more environmental and health benefits. By absorbing carbon dioxide, the trees are helping to mitigate greenhouse effects, which slows down climate change. Besides being climate friendly, urban canopy produces oxygen and intercepts airborne particulates, enhancing our community’s respiratory health.

What’s more, living in a greener area is also linked to an increase the residents’ levels of happiness and cognitive development, due to more contact with nature and less exposure to pollution, noise and heat. 

Basically, trees are a real godsend and I’ve no idea why the government does not allocate more space for greenery in the neighbourhood. I believe that with the opening of more parks or just lines of trees along the street, people’s lives could be greatly improved and our district would become an even more attractive spot to settle down in the future.
