I’m going to describe Hoan Kiem Lake, which means "The Lake of the Returned Sword", in Hanoi.  According to legend, Emperor Le Loi handed a magic sword called Heaven's Will which brought him victory in his revolt against the Chinese Ming Dynasty back to the Golden Turtle God in the lake and hence gave the lake its present name. The Tortoise Tower erected on a small island near the center of the lake is linked to the legend. Nowadays, the lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as a focal point for its public life.  

I like the lake not only because it is special in history but also because the water in the lake is not commonly found in other lakes elsewhere in the country. It’s greenish with dark or light shade depending on the reflection of the sky. Also, if you are lucky, you will catch sight of some giant tortoises rising out of the water. Last but not least, I like it because it is so romantic. When the darkness takes over, you can see couples holding hands walking side by side along the lake, trying to breathe in the breeze of a summer night or keep warm against the winter cold. 

If you have time and really want to observe Hanoi’s life, sit down on one of the stone benches, enjoy the view, and have a good talk with some local friends over an ice cream cone.

There are tons of outdoor activities people can enjoy when visiting rivers, lakes, or the sea. These can range from just sitting and relaxing and reading a book to walking to swimming to sunbathing, taking boat trips to doing water sports like surfing or water skiing. Some people like to relax by the water to unwind after all the stress of work. Others like to exercise in the water and enjoy the rush of the waves. It all depends on the person really. 

2. What benefits do you think people get from the activities they enjoy in the water?

In my opinion, there are benefits galore that people can get from the activities they enjoy in the water. Firstly, swimming can help them keep fit and be healthier. Secondly, taking part in water sports with friends can make people burn off stress 7 and forget about work. There are lots of extreme water sports that attract adrenaline junkies 8. Finally, they can make more friends and become more open-minded. 

3. What are the different advantages of going to the sea or to a swimming pool to enjoy yourself? What do you think the disadvantages are? 

Well, going to the sea means you stay outdoors getting fresh air and sunshine. You’re able to relax and enjoy yourself or get involved in water sports. Swimming is a great way to exercise and feel refreshed. But there are definitely some potential drawbacks. You should always take precautions when swimming, especially in the ocean where there can be dangerous currents that can pull you under the water or out to sea. It’s still important to be careful in the pool, but usually, there is a lifeguard there to ensure safety. Another thing is sunburn, which is far more likely on the beach than in a pool.
