I. Brainstorming Diagram: 6WS

The 6WS brainstorming diagram is likely a familiar concept to many, serving as a foundational tool for generating ideas for an IELTS Speaking Part 2 topic. It revolves around six question words: What, Who, Where, When, Why, and How. However, while the concept may be known, not everyone grasps its application. Let's delve into an example to acquaint ourselves with this method for the IELTS Speaking test.

For example: Describe a person who encouraged you to achieve a goal

  • WHAT: What goal are you aiming for?
  • WHO: Who is the person you want to describe?
  • WHERE: Where did this event take place (did this person help you achieve a goal at school or home)?
  • WHEN: When did this event take place (how did this person help you achieve the goal in a particular situation: when you were facing difficulties, feeling discouraged, or lost)?
  • WHY: Why did you decide to describe this person (did this person bring positive feelings or any benefits)?
  • HOW: How did the event in the topic happen (how did they help you achieve the goal)?

Note: Depending on the topic, you will choose the appropriate "W" and coherently organize your ideas. Avoid listing or disorganized thoughts as they can affect Fluency and Coherence in the IELTS Speaking test!

II. Supporting character

In the IELTS Speaking Part 2, candidates are often tasked with describing personal experiences, places, objects, or events. While the prompt may not explicitly mention individuals, incorporating a supporting character can enrich the narrative and enhance coherence.  If the topic doesn't explicitly reference human elements (e.g., Describe a street market in your city), how can you incorporate the WHO element? Let’s delve into the "Supporting character" technique.

A supporting character serves as a narrative device to enhance the coherence and vividness of your speech. Whether fictional or real, this character aids in expanding the scope of your ideas and enriching your vocabulary. Let's explore how to integrate this technique in the context of an example.

For example: Describe a street market in your city. You should say:

  • Where is it
  • What can you buy there
  • What is it famous for
  • How you feel about it

In this scenario, the absence of a specific individual in the prompt might lead one to overlook the WHO element, as it lacks specific mention of any individual.

However, by doing so, your speech will become a mere list of the characteristics of the market. For example, "Oh, it's near my house. I can buy everything there. It's famous for the best fish noodle soup in the region."

Thus, the question arises: Why introduce a "Supporting character" into your speech? The rationale lies in injecting vitality and narrative richness into your presentation.
