Aside from the Tet holiday, the Mid-Autumn or Fullmoon Festival is another important celebration in Vietnam. The festival is held annually on August 15th, according to the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. The festival dates back thousands of years ago and was originally for the celebration of bounteous harvests and fertility. In the modern days, it has become a celebration mainly for children.

Preparation usually starts a month prior to the festival. In the days leading up, the dragon and lion dancers could be seen practicing on the streets, many pop-up stalls of different mooncake brands will appear in every corner, selling decorated boxes filled with cakes of various flavors. Mooncakes are one of the hallmark traditions of this festival, symbolizing the completeness and union through their moon-like rounded shape.

This pastry comes in a seemingly infinite variety of exciting fillings, from the traditional versions of sweet green beans and lotus seeds to a more updated flavors of durian or matcha. Other signature dishes served on this occasion include lotus roots, green sticky rice, rice balls sweet soup or watermelons, etc with similar symbolic meaning.

Yet, there is much more going on during the actual day of the festival. On the night of the full moon, children will carry brightly color litted star-shaped lanterns, forming lantern processions and touring the neighborhoods while singing songs.

This practice originates from the folk tale of Cuoi the man who accidentally hung on to a magical banyan tree as it floated up to the moon and got stranded there. The lights from the children's lanterns will help to show Cuoi the way back to Earth. Also, the spectacular performance of dragon and lion dance is an indispensable part of the occasion.

The dragons and the lions will stop by some houses on their way, coming in and dancing as a blessing of luck and fortune for the home. The hosts in return give them some lucky money to show gratitude.

When I was a child, this festival and the time leading up to it was my favorite part of the year. I could eat a whole bunch of mooncakes and candies to satisfy my sweet tooth, and also join the colorful lantern parades with my friends, the dragons and the lions. Also, my grandparents used to be craftsmen making star lanterns a few decades ago, but they have stopped the business in recent years since people no longer prefer traditional handcrafted lanterns anymore.

All of my lanterns were made by my grandparents, and they even taught me how to make one once, which was very hard but at the same time a very fun process. Though I don't have much time now to celebrate the occasion, the old images and memories are still vivid in my mind, reminding me of the joyful feelings of the good old days.
