Being an art aficionado, I take a fancy to visiting art galleries. In fact, I’ve had the chance to see ample pieces of art, but the one that really stands out to me is Little Thuy, a so-called national treasure, painted by the legendary Tran Van Can, a renowned Vietnamese artist back in the twentieth century.  

I came across this masterpiece when I strolled around the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi a few months ago, and I was in love with it right at first sight. It was the portrait of a real person named Thúy, the eight-year-old grand-daughter of the artist. With big round black eyes, plump lips, chubby cheeks, she sits on a chair with her hands closed, slightly leaning and looking a little shy with a light curtain decorated with bright flowers in the back. Contrary to her overall timid appearance are her innocent black eyes looking directly at the viewers. 

This work intrigued me, especially when I read the description on its side. It has been claimed by some art critics that the expression and the pose of the girl pretty much reflects the image of Vietnamese society before the August Revolution, immersed in westernization.

Another thing that made me find it hard to take my eyes off of it is the harmonious color combination. The light-colored clothes of the girl, the pale yellow wall as well as the brown chair go really well with one another. Since the piece was meticulously painted in oil with western techniques and materials, the color palette looks even more brilliant.

It has been a few months, yet I still remember vividly every single detail of this masterpiece. Hopefully, I can arrange my time to go back to the museum to admire its beauty in person.

In my humble opinion, art is a way of self-expression, which can be used to communicate our ideas and thoughts that are difficult to put into words. They can either be put into texts, pictures or music, or whatever form that can best convey the message from the artists. 

People are into art, possibly because it can help them escape from all the burdens they shoulder in their daily lives. The moment they indulge in the art, their emotions may change, and it is likely that they will forget their worries, just totally getting immersed in the art and enjoy its beauty. Besides that, there are many aspects of art that humans do not get to see in their real lives, so it would be a great opportunity to look at the world through different lenses, from different perspectives.

2. Do you think that art is as important as academic subjects when it comes to educating children?

Sure. It has been claimed that art has the ability to foster children’s creativity, which plays a crucial role in their process of growing up. While art allows children to think outside the box, academic subjects seem to focus on merely critical and logical thinking.

Therefore, the integration of art into the curriculum is much needed for the comprehensive personal development. Moreover, art education also makes sure that kids can have a balance in their emotions and well-being, since subjects related to art are not as stressful as academic ones.

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of art education?

Art education has both pros and cons. On the one hand,  it is worth noting that learning arts may be costly, since it requires a whole lot of money for the tools and instruments needed for the whole learning process.

On the other hand, as previously said, art is, no doubt, of great importance to our personal development, since it can foster creativity, thus stimulating the right side of our brain, allowing us to think, and do things unconventionally. It also acts as a form of self-expression, helping us let it all hang out. Therefore, it is imperative that schools consider the money put on art education a form of investment in the future of their kids.
