After writing the entire essay and reaching the "crisis point," what we need most is a quick and effective method for writing a Conclusion in IELTS Writing Task 2 that doesn't have to be fancy but must convey the necessary ideas, meeting the IELTS 7+ standard. So, what should we do? Therefore, below are three steps to construct a Conclusion in IELTS Writing Task 2 that you should consider.

1. Step 1: Restate the answer to the essay question (mandatory)

The most important aspect of writing a Conclusion in IELTS Writing Task 2 is to restate your argument or viewpoint in the essay. The candidate's argument must be clearly expressed, typically in the Thesis Statement (at the end of the introduction). So, our task is simply to paraphrase. Paraphrasing involves both paraphrasing vocabulary specific to the topic and using expressive vocabulary. In the examples below, you will see the paraphrasing process clearly:

Example 1: Universal Language

  • Opening:...If this happens, despite some minor drawbacks, it will bring great benefits to humanity... Let’s paraphrase this sentence!
    • Drawbacks ➡ disadvantages ➡ disadvantageous
    • Benefits ➡ advantages
  • Conclusion: In summary, one may conclude that the use of one international language is not necessarily disadvantageous. There are clear advantages of having a universal language...

Example 2: Gap year

  • Opening: ... While this trend is beneficial in some respects, its shortcomings are more significant for the followers of this trend. Let’s paraphrase this sentence!
    • beneficial ➡ benefits ➡ gains
    • shortcomings ➡ drawbacks
  • Conclusion: In summary, there are some serious drawbacks associated with a gap year. These drawbacks far outweigh the potential gains.

2. Step 2: Restate the main ideas in the essay (most challenging)

Note that these are the main ideas that stand out the most in your essay. Try to paraphrase and summarize them as concisely as possible. This is a skill that is not easy because summarizing a long idea into a brief Conclusion in IELTS Writing Task 2 that meets the band 7+ requirement demands precision in vocabulary and grammar. The key here is to transform these main ideas into "short examples" and use "such as" or "including" to incorporate them into the conclusion. You can see examples below:

Example 1: Essay question about Universal Language. In this example, the conclusion is finding the prominent points in the essay:

  • A universal language facilitates increased international trade ➡ the growth of international trade
  • A universal language aids in developing a highly skilled workforce ➡ the development of a stronger intellectual workforce
  • In conclusion, we can have (using "such as"): In summary, one may conclude that the use of one international language is not necessarily disadvantageous. There are clear advantages of having a universal language, such as the growth of international trade and the development of a stronger intellectual workforce in every country.

Example 2: Essay question about Gap year. In this example, the prominent points in the essay are:

  • A gap year exposes students to difficulties too early in life (encounter difficulties too soon).
  • A gap year can lead to a shortage of intellectual labor in society (intellectual labor shortage).
  • A gap year provides an opportunity for students to acquire cultural knowledge, work skills, and experience (acquire cultural knowledge, working skills, and experience).
  • In conclusion, we can have (using "such as" and "including"): In summary, there are some serious drawbacks associated with a gap year, such as letting fresh school leavers encounter overwhelming difficulties too soon and the prospect of future intellectual labor shortage. These drawbacks far outweigh the potential gains, including the chance for students to acquire cultural knowledge, working skills, and experience.

3. Step 3: Provide recommendations/future predictions (optional)

If you have completed steps 1 and 2, and the conclusion is already sufficiently developed, you can skip step 3. However, if the conclusion is still relatively short or lacks elaboration after steps 1 and 2, you can choose to provide recommendations or make future predictions.

One common mistake many people make is providing recommendations or predictions that are unrelated to the essay. Remember that the conclusion in this case should still adhere to the logic of your essay, without deviating. It is just another way to discuss your essay's main points.

Example 1: Essay question about Universal Language

  • If you believe that a universal language has more advantages, you can predict that countries will use the same language in the future.
  • Add the following sentence to the end of the conclusion: It is predicted that many countries will use the same language in the future.

Example 2: Essay question about Gap year

  • If you think that the drawbacks of a gap year outweigh the benefits, you can advise young people not to rush into it.
  • Add the following sentence to the end of the conclusion: It is recommended that students should NOT take a year off after finishing high school.
