How to write the Topic Sentence in IELTS Writing Task 2:

  • There are two advantages of assigning homework to children. The topic here is "assigning homework to children," and the content is "the two advantages of doing so." After reading this topic sentence, the reader will understand that the topic will revolve around assigning homework, and the following sentences will discuss the two specific advantages of this practice.
  • Firstly, the added work is arguably an unnecessary source of pressure for young learners. This is also a topic sentence but at a narrower level. This sentence is tasked with addressing the first disadvantage mentioned in the previous example. This topic sentence informs the reader that the subsequent content will explain in detail why assigning homework is UNNECCESSARY.
  • Secondly, the repetition of homework could be counterproductive. This sentence is similar to the previous one. The message here is that the writer will write about how repetitive homework can have a COUNTERPRODUCTIVE effect.
