I. Structure of TOEIC Part 5

Before diving into vocabulary, it's crucial to understand the structure of Part 5 in the updated TOEIC format, which has been in effect since June 1, 2019. In the new format, the number of questions in Part 5 has been reduced from 40 to 30.

With a total of 75 minutes allocated for the entire TOEIC Reading section (Parts 5, 6, and 7), the recommended time to complete Part 5 is about 20 minutes—roughly 30 seconds per question. However, depending on the difficulty of each question and your test-taking skills, the time spent on each item may vary.

Here are the common question types found in TOEIC Part 5:

  • Word form – Choosing the correct word type

  • Prepositions – Selecting the appropriate preposition

  • Connecting words/adverb-clause markers – Identifying linking words or conjunctions

  • Pronouns/Reflexive/Possessive adjectives – Choosing the correct pronoun, reflexive pronoun, or possessive adjective

  • Relative pronouns – Selecting the correct relative pronoun

  • Word meaning – Identifying the correct vocabulary meaning

In the new TOEIC format, vocabulary-based questions appear frequently in Part 5. Strengthening your vocabulary is crucial to tackling this section effectively.
