  • Introduction: Introduce the chart or data table being described.
  • Overview: Provide an overall view of the key and important information from the chart before diving into the details.

The Overview plays a crucial role in Task 1, demonstrating that the writer has an overall view and can extract the key and important information from the chart before going into the details. To achieve a Task Achievement score of 6.0 or above, it is essential to have an effective Overview. True to its name, the writing of the IELTS Writing Task 1: Overview should ensure the following elements:

  • Present the most prominent 1-2 pieces of information from the chart: trends over time (if any), significant points (highest, lowest...), and comparisons between quantities.
  • Typically, begin with a structure that expresses the importance and clarity of the information:
    • It is clear/evident/apparent that S + V.
    • It can be seen that S + V.
    • As can be seen, S + V.
    • Upon closer examination, S + V
    • A closer look at the data reveals that S + V
    • Delving into the details, S + V
  • Use conjunctions to transition between ideas if writing 2 sentences, depending on the relationship between those two sentences: In addition, Additionally, However, Meanwhile...
  • Avoid providing specific data in the Overview: as this is the section for providing an overall view, it should not go into details or provide numerical data, leaving that for the body paragraphs.
  • Recommended writing time: 5 minutes
