The bar chart and table show how the percentage and number of households with Internet connectivity in five countries changed between 2001 and 2002. Overall, whereas South Korea reported the highest rate of Internet connection in 2001, the level for the US was on top in 2002. In addition, the greatest numerical increase happened in the US, while Britain experienced the largest proportional growth.
In 2001, South Korea ranked first with 122 connections per 1000 people, and the figure for the US was three-fourths that, with 93. The levels of Internet access in the remaining countries were minuscule in comparison, as Germany, Switzerland and Britain recorded around 3.5 Internet links for every 1000 people.
By 2002, there were 252.1 people using the Internet in the US for every 1000, which represented an increase of about 170%, or 159 individuals, from the 2001 figure. The US also became the country with the highest Internet access in 2002, followed by South Korea, which experienced the least significant percentage change of 10% to 134.4. The level for Britain, meanwhile, rose markedly to 10.89 connections per 1000 people, which was equivalent to 230% growth. Finally, Switzerland and Germany recorded the lowest rates in 2002, with around 7.9 and 5.6, respectively.
