Below are some sample responses for the IELTS Speaking Part 1 Clothing topic, carefully compiled by top-notch teachers at PREP. Take a look to effectively practice at home, Preppies!
1. Do you prefer to wear comfortable and casual clothes or smart clothes?
I prefer to wear comfortable and casual clothes. I like to be able to move around freely and not feel restricted by my clothing. I also like to be able to express my personality through my clothing, so I tend to go for items that are more relaxed and laid back. I think it's important to feel comfortable in what you're wearing, and I don't think anyone needs to sacrifice comfort for style.
-
restricted (adj): limited, constrained
-
laid back (adj): relaxed, casual
-
sacrifice (v): to give up something for the sake of something else
2. Do you spend a lot of time choosing clothes? Do you like wearing T-shirts?
Yes, I do spend a lot of time choosing clothes. I'm very particular about what I wear and I like to make sure I'm looking my best. I'm a big fan of T-shirts, especially graphic tees. I think they're comfortable and stylish, and they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I also like to mix and match different colors and patterns to create unique looks. I'm always on the lookout for new T-shirts to add to my wardrobe.
-
graphic tees (n): t-shirts with graphic designs or prints
-
on the lookout (p.p.): searching, looking out for
3. How do you prefer to buy your clothes (e.g. shops, large stores, and the Internet)?
Hmm, it depends on my mood to be honest but I generally prefer shops over the Internet. When you buy things online you can never tell how they’ll actually look from the small pictures and when they arrive the size or the style can be wrong for you. I like to be able to try things on before I commit to buying.
4. How important is fashion to you?
Fashion is the mantra that I live by. I’m always clued in on fashion trends and I like to look stylish all the time. I think it helps me show my personality and I always feel confident in a good outfit. We only have one life so it is important to be happy and be beautiful.
-
mantra (noun): a frequently repeated word or phrase, often in meditation
-
be clued in on: be familiar with, be aware of
5. How much do you think we can judge people by the clothes they wear?
Even though fashion is really important to me, it’s not something I judge others on. Sometimes they have problems in their life so they may not look that well at that moment or maybe fashion just isn’t as important to them as it is to me. Sadly though, I think in modern society there can be a lot of judgement of people based on how they look, but I try not to be a part of that.
