II. Effective IELTS Reading Practice Tests at home
IELTS Reading is a skill that can be easily mastered if you have the right and effective IELTS Reading Practice Tests method. Let's explore the following tips together, provided by Prep.
1. Reading Passage 1
Common question types in IELTS Reading Part 1: True/False/Not Given, Completion - Tasks (Table Completion, Note Completion, Flow-chart Completion, Labeling a Diagram), Short-answer Questions.
Steps for answering questions in IELTS Reading Part 1:
- Identify keywords in the question.
- Determine the location of the relevant information in the passage based on the keywords.
- Read the information carefully and answer the question (avoid reading irrelevant information).
Note:
- Keywords: nouns, verbs, adjectives, question words, negation words, proper nouns (names of people, places), numbers (dates, months, years, quantities).
- True/False/Not Given questions follow the order of information in the passage.
- In the reading passage, there are often substitute words such as "this/that/these/those/it/etc." Always ask yourself, "What does this word refer to?"
2. Reading Passage 2
Common question types in IELTS Reading Part 2: Matching Headings, Matching Information, Matching Features, Sentence Completion, Summary Completion.
Approach for answering questions in IELTS Reading Part 2: Read the first paragraph, answer all the questions related to that paragraph, and proceed similarly with the remaining paragraphs. For example, if Reading Passage 2 consists of 3 sections (Matching Headings + Matching Features + Summary Completion):
- Section 1:
- Step 1: Identify the heading for the section.
- Step 2: Find all the names of people mentioned in the Matching Features questions within the section.
- Step 3: If a name does not appear, move on to the next section to read. If a name appears, read the surrounding content carefully, compare it with other sentences in the passage, choose the answer if the information matches, and skip the section if it doesn't match.
- Apply the same approach to other sections.
- For Summary Completion questions: Identify the rewritten paragraph based on keywords ➡ read carefully and compare the available and missing information ➡ identify the missing information and choose the appropriate words from the passage to fill in the gaps ➡ After reading the final paragraph, revisit the headings where you are unsure to finalize the answers.
3. Reading Passage 3
Common question types in IELTS Reading Part 3: Yes/No/Not Given, Summary Completion With a Box, Multiple-choice Questions, Matching Sentence Endings.
- For Yes/No/Not Given questions, the approach and rules are similar to True/False/Not Given questions but they can be more challenging.
- For Matching Sentence Endings, follow the order from top to bottom (identify keywords in Sentence Beginnings to determine the location of the relevant information in the passage ➡ read carefully as the answers can be found).
Note for IELTS Reading Part 3: Reading Passage 3 delves deeper into advanced reading comprehension with difficult and abstract vocabulary. Sometimes, even after finding the location of the information and reading it carefully, mistakes can still be made. If your target score is 6-6.5, focus on Passage 1 and 2. If you aim for a higher score, pay close attention to special vocabulary and understand the nuances of words (whether the author is praising or criticizing).
