3. Sample Speaking

Below is a sample IELTS Speaking Part 2 response on the topic "Describe something health you enjoy doing". You should refer to this to effectively practice for the IELTS Speaking test at home:

There are a few recreational activities that I’m fond of, but there is one that I particularly enjoy, which is walking while listening to music around the lake near my house. Most of the time, I would wear a headset and then immerse myself in my personal zone. Many of my friends think that is quite unusual or even monotonous of me as they often go for a walk with a partner to chat, but that’s how I want to spend me time. Well, this is a chance for me to reflect whether I have a good rapport with my workmate or do my job efficiently. Or sometimes, I leave my mind blank and just go with the flow with the music.

I choose to do this activity because of my limited stamina. I can’t really do strenuous exercises; however, this will still help me to be a bit physically active. So, if you’re intent on losing weight or building muscles, this kind of exercise will not serve your needs. I try to go for a walk as much as I can after work because I have been stationary for the whole day, which is quite dangerous for the body. Therefore, this light activity helps me a lot physically and mentally. My pastime usually lasts for about an hour and how I choose the music mostly depends on my mood. Much as I enjoy being alone, I think in the future, I will ask a family member or a close friend to do this with me. Then, I can be active and bond with my loved ones at the same time.

II. Sample IELTS Speaking Part 3: Health

Sample IELTS Speaking Part 3: Health

1. Do you think people in your country are less healthy than they used to be?

Well, I would admit that there are scaremongers out there who constantly spreads fear about how the general public is consuming far more toxins and is generally more inactive compared to the past. However, the widespread availability of nutritious food as well as clean water worldwide has been immensely beneficial to the global health. I also think that people these days are more well-informed about proper diets and lifestyles to sustain or improve their fitness.

  • scaremonger (n): a person who deliberately tries to frighten people in order to achieve a particular aim

  • toxin (n): a poisonous substance

  • widespread availability (nphr): the condition of being widely accessible or available

  • immense (a): extremely large in scale or degree

  • well-informed (a): having a lot of knowledge and information about a particular subject

  • sustain (v): to maintain (an action or activity) over a period of time

2. How can we encourage young people to stay healthy?

Personally, I think education is the key. Ongoing exposure to knowledge regarding ways to keep fit, or the consequences of being ignorant about taking care of themselves, for instance, may motivate the youth in their journey of self-care. Hmmm, another point I would like to make is to create more convenient methods for the young to maintain a good health, such as easier eat-clean recipes, or less time-consuming fitness routines. This would facilitate the consistency in which youngsters do these health-beneficial activities.

  • ongoing exposure (n): continuous or prolonged contact with or experience of something

  • ignorant (a): lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular thing

  • fitness routine (n): a regular physical exercise program

  • facilitate (v): to make (an action or process) easy or easier

  • consistency (n): the quality of being consistent, reliable, or unchanging over time

3. Should governments intervene to force people to be healthier?

I think ‘force’ is a quite heavy word - ‘encourage’ would be a much better approach. So in Vietnam, the government is subsidizing milk for primary schoolers, and this has been conducive to increasing their average height. I’ve noticed, too, how near the residence areas lay some facilities to exercise that people can use for free. These facilities are quite popular among citizens every afternoon and early morning, and it is undeniable how much more active people have become in recent years thanks to this addition. All in all, careful and appropriate intervention is comparatively more advantageous compared to forceful policies.

  • approach (n): a way of dealing with a situation or problem

  • subsidize (v): to provide financial assistance to, especially to help an industry or business

  • conducive to (a): making a certain situation or outcome likely or possible

  • residence area (n): a residential district or neighborhood

  • undeniable (a): impossible to deny or dispute

  • intervention (n): the act of intervening, or the state of being intervened
