I consider myself quite a linguaphile, so I do want to get the hang of a myriad of foreign languages. Out of all of them, the one I would prioritize to learn first would definitely be Japanese. 

I currently have a lot on my plate and to be honest, I prefer to go spontaneous and play it by ear, so making a concrete study plan is hard. But I have been giving it some thought, and have made a few bullet points as to what I would do to become fluent in Japanese.

First, while I wholeheartedly believe in the power of self-learning, I’d rather join an elementary Japanese course from a well-reputed center to establish a foundation that I can build off of. This would probably last for about 2 - 3 months, and shall equip me with basic greetings and conversational sentences, as well as the ability to grasp the three writing systems of Japanese, which are Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana.

Then, I would continue to study from textbooks and Japanese media, such as movies, songs or books for better vocabulary and grammar. I know this is when the honeymoon phase of learning tends to wear off, and I would need to sustain my fresh motivation and enthusiasm with Japanese. This is why I think learning naturally from contents that I actually enjoy would be more beneficial for me in the long run.

Why do I want to choose Japanese? The most important reason for me is the challenge that it would bring. Linguistically speaking, Japanese and English, or even Vietnamese, cannot be further apart. This means immense effort and hard work for me, but learning Japanese would also give me an opportunity to understand the depths of one of the biggest culture powerhouses in the world through the language that it uses.

Also, Japanese anime and manga were an integral part of my childhood, so I think learning Japanese could be a way to reminisce about those years.

1. Do you want to become a foreign language teacher in the future? Why?

Funnily enough, I am working as an ESL teacher. To be fair, this profession never crossed my mind when I was still young. I thought the teachers’ workload was crazy, and I also did not think I could master proper pedagogical skills to teach anyone. As a matter of fact, such negative assumptions continued to grow with me until I graduated highschool. I was inspired by many of my English teachers and lecturers, as they showed me how working as a foreign language teacher can be a bit of a minefield, but it is a job that’s intrinsically rewarding.

2. What kind of quality should a language teacher have?

It might take weeks to name all of the necessary qualities, but let me choose the top two. Hmmm, I always value expertise, no matter what field you work in, so an in-depth knowledge on language and learning is quintessential to me. Building rapport is also such an important aspect of the classroom, especially when it comes to language teaching, because I believe that a mutually trusting relationship between teachers and students really assists in the process of learning a new language.

3. Do you think grammar is important when you learn a foreign language? Why?

Well, I know grammar has a bad reputation among language learners as being abstract and overly complicated, so some people may argue that you don’t need to put a lot of emphasis on studying it. But for me, grammar is a system of how individual words work together to create meaning in our spoken and written language. It is there in our everyday conversations and academic or professional documents.

Hence, you might not need to become a grammar professor, but a lack of basic grammar awareness would hinder your ability to deliver effective messages to people abroad. So yes, it is, in short, extremely important.
