The pie charts illustrate how the proportions of vehicles purchased in the US changed over four separate years. Generally, the share of trucks and SUVs bought had increased at the expense of cars, with SUVs experiencing the most significant growth. Despite experiencing a decrease in percentage over the period, car sales remained the most common in the US.
In 1980, the vast majority of four-wheelers sold in America were cars, with 95%. Trucks accounted for the remaining 5%, but by 1990, their share had grown to 15%. SUVs, meanwhile, had been present in the market by 1990, making up 6% of all purchased vehicles that year. As a result, the figure for cars was markedly lower at 79% then.
By 2000, vehicle sales in the US which involved cars had fallen further to 54%, their lowest point throughout the surveyed years. Meanwhile, the level of SUVs sold had risen by 24 percentage points to 30%, which was nearly twice that of trucks, with 16%. The shares of all four-wheeler types did not change significantly afterward, as in 2010, purchased cars again remained on top with 58%, while the proportions of SUVs amounted to a half of that figure, respectively. With 14%, trucks recorded the lowest percentage of sales that year.
